Navigating Wellness Trends
Navigating wellness trends on social media can feel like crossing a busy intersection with traffic coming from all directions. While these trends can spark new ideas and inspire, it’s important to remember that what works for one person may not be right for you. Everyone’s body is different, we are all unique, and what benefits one individual may not suit someone else.
This is not to dig at social media narratives, but rather to support and encourage and remind you to connect with yourself. The key to finding what truly supports your well-being is understanding your body. Your body has innate intelligence and is always communicating with you with some form of bio-feedback. Work with a practitioner who can help you discover what works for you, and consult your doctor when making changes.
It’s not just about the physical - your beliefs matter too. What you believe about your health can influence your body’s response to different approaches. If you deeply believe something will work, it may help you, but if you don’t believe in it, that can create internal resistance and conflicts. We’ve heard of the placebo effect, but it’s deeper than that.
Often, our beliefs are subconscious, with the subconscious mind influencing up to 99% of our intelligence. These beliefs are shaped by past experiences and external pressures, making it difficult to pinpoint what’s truly aligned for your health. This inner tension can cause even the healthiest habits to feel off or counterproductive.
We’ve all heard stories of people who eat McDonald’s daily, smoke heavily, and drink excessively, yet somehow manage to live long, healthy lives. On the flip side, we’ve seen others who eat nothing but green salads and smoothies, live in alignment with their health, yet still face ongoing health challenges. The reality is, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to health and wellness.
While food certainly plays an important role, it’s just one piece of the wellness puzzle. Our true nourishment comes from many sources: the beliefs we hold, the relationships we nurture, our careers, creativity, rest, relaxation, joy, and a sense of wonder, and more. These “primary foods” have a profound impact on our well-being - sometimes even more so than what we eat.
When we feel pressured to follow certain trends or align with specific beliefs about health, that internal conflict can block any potential benefits, regardless of how “healthy” the trend may seem. It’s about finding what truly works for you, not just what works for everyone else.
If someone insists their way is the only way, thank them and move forward. Your health is personal - find what works for you, respecting your body’s needs and beliefs. Trust in your own journey and remember, wellness is about alignment, not conformity.
