Who chose the food on your plate?

Who really chooses the food on your plate?

It might seem like an odd question, but it can reveal a lot about your relationship with food. Fortunate to be learning from and being inspired by Geneen Roth, I’ve been exploring how our food choices and behaviors develop over time.

Do you pick certain foods because your Mum once told you to eat them, and now, as an adult, you continue the habit? Or did you rebel against those rules, indulging in the foods you were once “not allowed”?

Think about the foods you consider off-limits. Do you ever find yourself overeating them when you finally give in?

Taking a closer look at what's on your plate can offer deep insights into your belief system, values, behaviors, feelings, and even how you view yourself - with kindness and love, or disgust and shame - and everything in between.

For example, my Dad loved really good chocolate. Though he’s no longer with us in person, I used to feel a connection to him whenever I ate it. It took me a long time to realize that I didn’t need chocolate to have his presence with me. I still love a great truffle or dark chocolate, and if you want a recommendation, just ask! But my relationship with chocolate shifted when I started to understand the deeper reasons behind my choices.

I’m continuing to experiment with food plate analysis and discovering more about myself in the process.
