Discovering Your Values: The Key to Lasting Well-Being and Fulfillment
Have you ever felt that something in your life is out of balance or unfulfilled? Often, this discomfort arises when our actions are not aligned with our core values. Our values guide us, influencing our thoughts, decisions, relationships, and approach to life. When we live in harmony with them, we experience greater clarity, peace, and fulfillment.
Values are not static; they can evolve over time, especially during significant life events. A health crisis, the loss of a loved one, a relationship fracture, or a job change can shift what we value most. Even the holiday season can bring up our values - offering us opportunities to discover what we truly value and what we don't.
As you reflect on the past year and consider new year priorities, you may discover that your values could be shifting. When you begin to feel discontentment, it's a good time to do a values audit and explore what’s coming up for you. Understanding what’s important to you right now can provide the clarity needed to realign your actions and find greater fulfillment. If you struggle to think about what your values are, sometimes it’s helpful to consider what you don’t want first and then look at the opposite of it. i.e. I don’t want to be tied to my corporate job —> I want a job that is more flexible —> Do you value flexibility? —> Do you value calm? —> Do you value independence?
As you think about the new year, don’t get sucked into making resolutions if you haven’t explored your values first. If your resolutions aren’t aligned with your core values, it will be 100 times harder to stick with them. When you know what truly matters to you, your goals will feel more authentic and achievable.
